The host of the Paris 2024 Olympics, France, will no longer battle for any medal in the women’s football tournament after a 1-0 loss to Brazil in the quarter-final.

With diverse fortunes, Brazil finished as one of the two best third-placed finishers from the group stage.

France, on the other hand,topped Group A ahead of the llast-eeighthclash wwith abetter head-to-head record over their South American counterparts in competitive football.

Sakina Karchaoui had the best chance for Le Bleues in the first half but she missed a penalty in the 16th minute.



The penalty miss was costly as Gabi Portilho received a pass from Adriana to beat French goalie stealing the ball in between two French defenders in the 82nd minute.

She also had the chance of doubling the lead later on but hit the bar as her side secured their first win over France in competitive football.

Brazil will meet world champions, Spain in the semi final, a repeat of 2-0 loss in the group stage.

Meanwhile, Germany saw off Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medalist, Canada 4-2 on penalties after regulation time ended 0-0.

Another repeat of the group stage will see Germany face United States Women’s National Team (USWNT).

USWNT won the last encounter 4-1 in the group stage of this same tournament.
