For the second match in the women’s football tournament of the Paris 2024 Olympics, Nigeria suffered a 1-0 loss this time to world champions Spain in their second Group C game in Nantes.

The nine-time African champions had lost their first match 1-0 to Brazil and put up a wonderful defensive display against the top-ranked women’s football team, which is making its debut at the Olympics.
Former world best player Alexia Putellas forced goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie to multiple saves, but she was not to be denied with five minutes remaining on the clock.
Putellas converted a free kick which Nnadozie couldn’t save after leaving the line in a bid to punch the ball.

The win sealed the maiden UEFA Women’s Nations League champions’ place in the quarter-final of the women’s football tournament of the Olympics after two consecutive victories.
Meanwhile, Japan returned to winning ways with a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Brazil, bouncing back from a 2-1 loss to Spain.
The South Americans broke the deadlock in the 46th minute through Jheniffer after Mina Tanaka missed the spot kick for the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup winners.

Saki Kumagai restored parity for the Asian side in the 92nd minute from the penalty spot to salvage earlier penalty miss.
Two minutes later, Momoko Tanikawa scored the winning goal for Japan, which moved to the second position in Group C with three points ahead of their final group game against Nigeria on Wednesday.
Brazil also has three points and will face Spain in their last group match.
