Paris 2024 Olympics: It Will Be France Against Argentina In The Quarter-Final

Today, the final group games in the men’s football category, at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics games took place, and it was to determine the teams that would be playing in the quarterfinals of the competition, with the top two teams in each group guaranteed of a place in the knockout stage.

In group A, the host nation, France were able to seal their place in the next round with a convincing 3-0 win over New Zealand at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille. France, coming off two wins, only needed a draw to reach the last 16, but goals by skipper Jean-Philippe Mateta, Desire Doue and Arnaud Kalimuendo made it a perfect first round.

The U.S. go through to the last eight in second place after a strike from Djordje Mihailovic and a Kevin Paredes double earned them victory in St Etienne. The 27-year-old Mateta grabbed the lead for France, taking advantage of New Zealand’s poor defending in the 19th minute.
Doue added another in the 71st after a neat passing move, before Kalimuendo’s low shot sealed the win three minutes later.
Coached by Arsenal and Barcelona legend, Thierry Henry, they won all their three matches without conceding a goal, defeating USA and Guinea in the other games, scoring 7 goals in total, going into the next round, to lay down the marker as the team to watch out for in this tournament.
For USA, they were able to dust themselves up after losing to France in their opening game to register consecutive wins over New Zealand and Guinea. At an almost empty Geoffroy-Guichard stadium, midfielder Mihailovic opened the scoring in the 14th minute by sending a brilliant free-kick into the top left corner.

Paredes made it 2-0 off Paxten Aaronson’s great through ball in the 31st and got his second 15 minutes from time. In the next round, It will France against Argentina in Lyon on Friday.
