In their opening game at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, the Australian Opals were defeated by the Nigerian D’Tigress.

In a thrilling display, the African giants defeated their Australian counterpart 75-62 on Monday at Pierre Mauroy Stadium.



This was the team’s first Olympic win since 2004.

Following the break, Australia battled back and won the third quarter 19-10, but Nigeria responded with a decisive 24-15 victory in the fourth quarter, setting off wild celebrations in their technical area.

Ezzine Kalu, who is back, played with her best game ever, scoring 19 points, grabbing five rebounds, and dishing out five assists. Together with Amy Okonkwo, the captain of the team and 2023 AfroBasket MVP, Elizabeth Balogun, Promise Amukamara, Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah, and Elizabeth Balogun, head coach Remy Wakama launched Kalu.

Nigeria is now well-positioned to advance out of Group B. Before concluding their group stage campaign against Canada on August 4, they will play the hosts, France, next.
