Pau Cubarsí: Barcelona’s Starlet Signs Extension

Written by Olaleye Oluwadamilola

Pau Cubarsí and Barcelona have agreed to extend the center back’s contract with the team until June 30, 2027. A buyout clause worth 500 million euros has been agreed upon for the player.

More Details

The defender signed the contract this Thursday morning at an event that was also attended by Joan Laporta, president of FC Barcelona; Rafa Yuste, first vice-president; Joan Soler, director of youth football; and Anderson Luis de Souza “Deco,” sporting director; Toni Hernàndez, coordinator of youth football; and youth football general manager.

Cubarsí’s ascent to the first team has been nothing short of extraordinary. It’s hard to imagine that only four months have passed since he made his official Copa del Rey debut against Unionistas on January 18 of this year.

In that time, he has played 20 games and won the hearts of the supporters, solidifying his place in the defensive lineup. Although he has given some incredible performances, his MVP-winning performance against Napoli in the Champions League at Montjuïc stands out above the others.

With a remarkable 90.98% pass accuracy rate, he has started 17 of those 20 games. His influence was so great that he was also promptly called up for Spain’s friendlies against Brazil and Colombia. He was the youngest defender to play for La Roja in history, having only been there for 17 years and 2 months.

Despite signing a contract extension, Girona is still interested in him. According to Sport, Los Blanquivermells hope to sign the young defender for a season-long loan.

Between 2014 and 2018, Cubarsi was in Girona’s youth academy before relocating to Barcelona, where he has remained ever since. Even for a single season, head coach Michel Sanchez and sports director Quique Carcel would fervently welcome him back, but at this point, Barcelona has no plans to consider a loan arrangement.

Xavi Hernandez’s approval is the only way Barcelona would permit Cubarsi to go on loan to Girona. Considering that he has maintained him as an undeniable starter for the past two months, it’s extremely unlikely.
