Portland Timbers Add Experience And Quality With Loan Signing Of Felipe Carballo

Portland Timbers have signed midfielder Felipe Carballo on loan from Grêmio, a top Brazilian team.

The deal for the 28-year-old Uruguayan is for the 2025 season and includes an option to buy him permanently. He will be a Designated Player on the team’s roster.

This isn’t Carballo’s first time in Major League Soccer; he previously played for the New York Red Bulls in 2024 and 2025, where he scored two goals and had two assists in 27 games, helping them reach the 2024 MLS Cup.
“Felipe provides us with immediate experience and quality,” said general manager Ned Grabavoy.
“He will be a welcome addition to our midfield group as we continue aiming to finish the season strong. We look forward to integrating him into the group quickly and believe he can play an important role this season.”
Felipe Carballo has had a notable career playing for several clubs, including Grêmio, Nacional, and Sevilla’s reserve team. Across 290 appearances, he’s scored 28 goals and provided 16 assists, contributing to seven titles won by his clubs.

On the international stage, Carballo has represented Uruguay seven times, with his most recent appearance being a World Cup qualifier against Bolivia in November 2023.
“We are really pleased to add Felipe to the roster. He’s a player we’ve watched closely since his arrival in MLS and were impressed by the quality he demonstrated for the New York Red Bulls in their MLS Cup run,” said head coach Phil Neville.
“Felipe’s leadership and football acumen complement our current group of midfielders, and we expect him to make an immediate impact on the field for us.”
