After the session, Norris said: “I think we did want to do a few more laps than what we did today but we still learned a lot of things. Still a very important day.

“With the new regulations these days are more important than ever, they’re crucial for the development over the next one, two, three, four months, maybe more. It’s important just to understand everything.”

Ferrari racked up the most laps in the end, 153 on a very good day for the Scuderia. Red Bull were not too far back on 147, but at the other end of the pile, Haas managed just 43 and Alfa Romeo a lowly 32.

Meanwhile…

Charles Leclerc notched up the win in the morning proceedings. The Monegasque who had a good season last year, especially over one lap with two poles to his name returned to the top of the timing sheets, with a 1m 20.165s.

He started the day on the soft compound tyre when running the aero rakes, but subsequently joined the pack on the harder rubber to take top of the sheet before making way for Carlos Sainz for the afternoon session.
