Premier League Champions Facing Potential Points Deduction

Story by Jacobs Dunga
Revelations surfaced a few days ago that Manchester City has had their request for the Premier League to keep the investigations of their financial dealings a secret. Football finance expert, Kieran Maguire discusses the situation.
This isn’t City’s first time of having to defend themselves concerning the financial side of the game as they ran the risk of being thrown out of Europe’s top Club competition, the UEFA Champions League, last season before they had the decision overturned on appeal by the court of arbitration for sports.
Speaking about the situation on The Price of Football, Maguire shed light on the actual happenings as well as the potential sanctions that the Etihad outfit might face as a result of their financial dealings.
“If it turns out they could be subject to fines, if they exceed the Financial Fair Play limit, they could be subject to a points deduction.”

“But the crazy thing is, that under the Premier League rules, you’re allowed to lose £105m over the three-year assessment period compared to €30m [for UEFA punishments].
“So we could end up in a ludicrous situation where the Premier League arbitration panel concludes that Manchester City has been in breach of the rules, they then recalculate the numbers, and it works out that City’s losses are £90m over three years. Therefore they’re under the statute in terms for which another punishment applies and they just get a finger-wagging.”
It is yet to be seen what sanctions they would face if at all there’s going to be any, with talks of their titles being revoked far from it, we wait to see how the situation eventually concludes.
