In a shareholders meeting held on Thursday to make decisions on the three-sub rule, Video Assistant Referee (VAR), crowds among other things, it is believed that eleven out of the twenty clubs present at the meeting – which included representatives from newly promoted Leeds United, West Bromwich Albion, and Fulham – voted against the use of five substitutes in games for 2020/21 season.

It is believed that the bigger clubs in the league were in favour of the rule but were ultimately out-voted by the other clubs who feel that the use of five substitutes would create some form of imbalance and insecurity among the teams in the Premier League.

The five-sub rule was put in place by the International Football Association Board, IFAB, to limit the effects that the tight games schedule might have on the players amid the coronavirus pandemic during the 2019/20 season. An extension was announced later, pushing the use of the rule till the end of 2020/21, including the international tournaments that follow the season.

With the Premier League taking this path, it’s left to be seen if other leagues will toe the same line. It will also be interesting to see how it will affect the Premier League teams in continental competitions.
