World number five survived a scare in the round of 16 as he got a hard fought win (6-3 5-7 7-6(9)) against David Goffin in an intriguing tie to reach the quarter finals in Madrid.

However, the Belgian saved two match points and forced the Spaniard to a decider who led 5-3 earlier to win the second set 7-5.
The third set was more even with each player taking turns to win game one after the other, but it was Goffin who looked set to upset the twenty-one grand slams winner for a win before Nadal saved four match points in the tiebreak.
“Honestly, [it was] very tough. David played at a very high level and at the same time I am not completely happy because I had to finish the match in straight sets without a doubt,” he said.
“A very important victory, saving match points, that’s confidence, that gave me the chance to keep going. I need matches and days like today to be fitter sooner.”
