Ralf Rangnick’s men were obviously not anywhere near the level displayed by the Reds on Wednesday night and already conceded just two minutes after the referee started the game.

The result further underlines the ineptitude of this United team under Ralf Rangnick with the German questioning his side’s fitness and training after Paul Pogba limped off after just nine minutes.

“Muscular injury in his calf…he pulled his muscle,” the United interim boss explained. “This is now the seventh or eighth player missing with injury and we’re only playing in one competition. It has to raise some questions.

“I’m not happy about that at all, but this is the sad truth right now and we have to accept it.” Asked what may be causing the high number of injuries, Rangnick added: “Liverpool are playing in four competitions and have no injuries, this is also on how you train. What you do, what measures you take in order to recover and be fully fit. These are the questions that need to be asked.”

“You can change it, other clubs change it. Why should their players be fitter than our players? This is not something that has to be automatically like that.”

Rangnick less than a month ago had questioned his side’s toughness in a stalemate against Leicester City and the gaffer coming out to say it again says a lot about the United squad.

Meanwhile…

Manchester United, legend Gary Neville has branded the club a “mess” following their latest defeat to Liverpool.

The 20 time champions were humbled 4-0 by the flying Reds in what seemed like a fixture between a Championship seeking side against a relegation bound outfit.

Neville was outraged by the United players as Liverpool toyed with them on the night. “It is becoming very predictable now because there are some decent players out on that pitch and there is some talent,” Neville said after the match. “So, I have no idea and don’t know how to explain how it has gone from being slightly promising, finishing second last season, to the point of an all time low in my 42 years of watching United.

“I have never seen it as bad as that. I have never seen a Manchester United team wilt in a football game in my 40 years of watching them.

“The players are broken, they are broken players. There are some decent players out there, they have talent and have played at good levels, but they are finished and they are broken this season. It is a mess.”

Neville admitted Liverpool are miles apart and cannot wait for the season to finish to bail United out of the unending shame.

“It’s a decade of repeated failure and that’s not good enough,” Neville added.

“Man Utd have got everyone in the country expected tonight. Really in a poor place. The end of the season can’t come quick enough. Liverpool are top of their form and it was always going to be difficult.

“This is a broken Man Utd squad in this moment in time. It’s on the edge, that’s for sure.” United interim manager Ralf Rangnick was also struggling to find a positive in the contest, stating a huge overhaul will likely be needed if they are to catch up with Liverpool.

“It is embarrassing, it is disappointing, maybe even humiliating,” Rangnick said during his post-match interview. “We have to accept they are six years ahead of us now.

“When Jurgen Klopp came they changed at the club and lifted not just the team but the club and city to a new level. That is what needs to happen with us in the next transfer windows.”
