Written by Albert Echatah
After being targeted by San Marino players who intended to intentionally damage him during Tuesday’s European Championship qualifying match, Rasmus Hojlund is hoping to have avoided injury.
More Details
The Manchester United striker started the scoring in a tight 2-1 victory over the European underdogs, but in the 87th minute, he was the victim of a careless challenge from behind.
After overhearing San Marino players discussing plans to harm his teammate in Italian, Simon Kjaer, the captain of Denmark, linked the incident to the one that resulted in Neymar breaking his back during the 2014 World Cup.
Hojlund, an Atalanta alumnus who also speaks Italian, overheard their preparations and was adamant that Alessandro Tosi, the player who took part in the challenge, ought to have been dismissed. After scoring the game's first goal, the United striker claims he was repeatedly singled out by San Marino players, who he believed were trying to "ruin someone else's career."
‘I understand Italian, and I could hear that some of them were running around and saying nasty things to me. They were pushing and shoving, and they were grabbing onto me aggressively,’ Hojlund said, Bold report.
After scoring three goals in six games for his new club, the 20-year-old has since replaced Erik ten Hag as the first-choice up forward. However, he must now wait to see if the grueling contest on Tuesday has taken its toll before United's trip to Sheffield United on Saturday.
‘I still haven’t seen how my back is doing. Right now, I feel it’s okay, but I don’t know how I’ll be tomorrow morning’ he said.
