Reactions Trail Luciano Spalletti’s Decision To Leave Out Locatelli From Italy’s Euro 2024 Squad

Written By Onyeka Daniel

The coach of the Italian national team, Luciano Spalletti has released his 30-man provisional squad for EURO 2024, including three uncapped players in the squad but four players from the longlist will have to be cut ahead of the announcement of the final, 26 man squad in June.

More Details

While there wasn’t much surprises in the team, there was a major omission and three uncapped players are in the provisional squad. They include goalkeeper Ivan Provedel of Lazio, who has been involved in several Azzurri squads over the last year, having won the 2022-23 Golden Glove in Serie A last year.

To no surprise, Riccardo Calafiori is in the squad this time around. The 22-year-old Bologna centre-back has recently been nominated for Serie A defender of the year alongside Juventus and Inter counterparts Bremer and Alessandro Bastoni.

Calafiori looks set to make the final 26-man Italy squad, but is still awaiting his debut for the national team. Michael Folorunsho is also on the 30-man squad list. The Napoli-owned Frosinone midfielder earned his first call-up to the Italy team back in March for friendlies against Venezuela and Ecuador in the United States.

But he was not called upon in-game on that occasion. There are also two players who have just the single cap to their names, both of whom made their debuts in the United States during the most recent international break. They are Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and Torino wing-back Raoul Bellanova.

Goalkeepers: Donnarumma (PSG), Vicario (Tottenham), Meret (Napoli), Provedel (Lazio).

Defenders: Acerbi (Inter), Bastoni (Inter), Darmian (Inter), Scalvini (Atalanta), Buongiorno (Torino), Mancini (Roma), Calafiori (Bologna), Di Lorenzo (Napoli), Bellanova (Torino), Dimarco (Inter), Cambiaso (Juventus).

Midfielders: Barella (Inter), Frattesi (Inter), Cristante (Roma), Pellegrini (Roma), Fagioli (Juventus), Jorginho (Arsenal), Ricci (Torino), Folorunsho (Hellas Verona).

Forwards: Chiesa (Juventus), Raspadori (Napoli), Retegui (Genoa), Scamacca (Atalanta), Orsolini (Bologna), Zaccagni (Lazio), El Shaarawy (Roma).

Manuel Locatelli was surprised to be left out of Italy’s Euro 2024 squad and posted a cryptic message on Instagram. Sky Sport Italia reports Locatelli was informed about Spalletti’s decision minutes before the squad was publicly confirmed, and both he and Juventus were left surprised.

The ex-Sassuolo midfielder posted a cryptic message a few minutes later the Azzurri squad was officially confirmed. It was just a plain black Instagram story which, according to Sky Sport correspondent Paolo Aghemo may represent the midfielder’s mood.

Massimo Brambati has also come out to defend Spalletti’s decision not to include Locatelli in his preliminary squad for Euro 2024. The midfielder was an important member of the Italy team that won the last edition of the competition.

After that tournament, he moved to Juventus from Sassuolo and was expected to blossom at Italy’s biggest club. However, that hasn’t been the case, and it seems Locatelli has actually regressed since his transfer to Turin. This decline has affected his standing in the national team.

Perhaps, it was why he was omitted from Italy’s latest squad for the upcoming competition in Germany. Brambati is not surprised by the decision to leave Locatelli out, insisting that the midfielder has regressed since moving to Juve.He said,

“I knew for 2 weeks that Fagioli was there. Isn’t Locatelli here? I agree because he hasn’t grown, but he has deteriorated, I’m sorry to say. Involved because you had to put a high-quality midfielder alongside him in January. And I also agree with bringing Fagioli out.” He further added.
