Real Betis Face Manuel Pellegrini’s Managerial Future Conundrum After Saudi Arabia Link
Written by Olaleye Oluwadamilolola
In order to recover from an unexpected 2-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano before the season’s last quarter, Real Betis who are having an unusual season are looking to pick themselves up for a strong last run finish. Although Los Verdiblancos haven’t played well this season, if Athletic Club wins the Copa del Rey, they would still be eligible for Europe based on their current seventh-place finish but yet the club faces Manuel Pelligrini’s uncertainty on the sidelines.
More Details
That is far from certain as Betis are going through a transition from the team Manuel Pellegrini initially built, and with various young assets, some are questioning if the Chilean will be persuaded to take what he has himself called a highly rich offer as Saudi Arabian interest in him resurfaces.
For Betis, Isco has been a revelation since joining from Real Madrid, so it’s not surprising that their play suffered when he was injured. With Cardoso beside them, German veterans Pezzella and Rui Silva would feel secure in their midfield for the upcoming season or two if they could extend Marc Roca’s loan agreement.
It appears evident—though there is a case to be made that he does not—that Pellegrini no longer has the same level of faith in his team as he once did, following his declaration that he was purposefully not concentrating on their European campaign and an early Copa del Rey loss to Alaves. Patience will be needed for their younger players, but it’s also reasonable to wonder if Pellegrini has what it takes to develop another team at Betis.
Los Verdiblancos will have a very difficult time finding a replacement for Pellegrini should Betis and Pellegrini decide to go on. They need to take into account the fact that Pellegrini has won the sole championship in the last 20 years and has the best win rate of any Betis manager when determining whether or not his cycle is finished.
Meanwhile…
This summer, it will be interesting to follow Joao Felix’s condition. He is not going to be a member of Atletico Madrid’s squad for the upcoming season, but Barcelona, who is expected to be his final destination in 2024–2025 is unwilling to sign him long-term since they believe his asking price is excessive.
The most likely course of action appears to be another loan arrangement, which may include a permanent option. Felix might, however, possibly join with Barcelona this summer if they are able to acquire him for free or at a drastically lower cost.

Ruben Uria (via Sport) claims that if Barcelona agrees to send Atleti Robert Lewandowski for free, then Atleti may be willing to drop their demands for Felix. This is comparable to what happened with Luis Suarez back in 2020. Los Rojiblancos would either give Felix away for free or substantially lower their asking price if the Catalan side sticks to their position.
Lewandowski appears to be a definite target for Atletico Madrid, and some Barcelona officials are eager to let go of the Polish veteran this summer due to his exorbitant salary. It could be wise to monitor this scenario.
