Authorities in Spain have successfully thwarted potential terrorist attacks against Real Madrid and other European sporting events as reported by Football Espana. The Guardia Civil, a division of the Spanish police, dismantled a propaganda network linked to the Islamic State (IS) in a recent operation.

More Details

The network specifically targeted Real Madrid, calling on followers to attack the team bus and fans at the stadium. One chilling message instructed an attacker to target the team’s arrival point, create a diversion with improvised explosives, and then carry out a direct attack.

This wasn’t the only target. The propaganda network aimed to incite violence across Europe. They encouraged attacks during Euro 2024 matches in Dortmund, Berlin, and Munich, using the slogan “score the last goal.”

Additionally, graphics suggesting attacks in Paris during the Olympics, with the message “The Olympics have already started for the solitary wolves,” were also found.

Meanwhile…

This operation wasn’t the first time authorities intervened. Similar threats emerged against Champions League stadiums, including Emirates, Metropolitano, Bernabeu, and Allianz Arena. Increased security measures during those games prevented any incidents.

The dismantling of the propaganda center and the arrest of nine individuals across Spain is a testament to international collaboration in combating terrorism. Authorities also seized servers used to spread extremist material and shut down three media outlets linked to the network: Voz de Al-Andalus, Al Raud, and Fahris.

This successful operation highlights the importance of constant vigilance and coordinated efforts to prevent future attacks.
