Chelsea defender Reece James has successfully put pen to paper on a contract renewal at the club.

“Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce Reece James has signed a new six-year contract.” The club announced.

James is a Cobham Academy graduate who has been at the club since the age of six. He made his senior debut in 2019 under Frank Lampard after a successful loan spell with Wigan Athletic where he won their player of the season award.

He also became Chelsea’s youngest ever scorer in Champions League history with his goal against Ajax Amsterdam in a thrilling 4-4 score line at the Bridge.

He made his England debut a year later in 2020 and already have thirteen caps to his name.

The 22 year old after signing the contract said: ‘I am over the moon with my new contract and I’m thankful for the fans, the new ownership and everyone involved in the club. I cannot wait to see what the future holds, and I am sure we will have the chance of winning many trophies.

‘I grew up supporting this club and I’ve been here since I was a six-year-old. I put pen to paper on a new deal because this is the club I want to be at. I’d like to say a special thanks to the fans, I am here to stay and we have a bright future ahead of us.’

He’s been one of Chelsea’s brightest stars over the past three seasons and has proved to be a player for the present and the future.

Chairman of the club Todd Boehly who has brought the NFL system of awarding long term contracts to players said of his satisfaction after the announcement.

‘We are thrilled to give Reece a new long-term contract at Chelsea. He is an outstanding player and a true Chelsea man, and we are all looking forward to watching him continue to flourish at Stamford Bridge.’

Boehly has successfully brought in youngsters Cesare Casadei and Carney Chukwuemeka for huge fees where they both singed long term contracts.

He has now continued the trend with the players he sees as the future of the club by tying James to a new long term deal.

Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, co-controlling owners, said: ‘Reece is a very special footballer and one we love having at Chelsea under our ownership. His blend of physical and technical ability is a huge asset to our team now and for many years to come.’

After James, the club will now work on also renewing midfielder Mason Mount’s contract and hand him a long term deal just like James.
