Referees Make Rare NWSL Statement

On Monday, Professional Referee Organization (PRO) made a rare public statement about the mistake.

“A goal was incorrectly not awarded to NJ/NY Gotham FC after the ball had crossed the goal line between the goal posts,” the statement read.
“The match officials misjudged where the ball had crossed the goal line, and wrongly awarded a corner kick to NJ/NY Gotham FC.”

Based on PRO’s internal processes for officiating reviews, the referees involved in the no-goal call were removed from their next assignments.

NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman has committed to raising referee standards, including the addition of Video Assistant Referee (VAR), which would have reviewed an incident like the one in the Gotham game.
NWSL referees are also in the process of unionizing for better standards across the board.
