With eyes across the globe still watching the 2022 men’s World Cup, the New York Times released an investigation into Qatar’s women’s national soccer team.

Despite being founded in 2009 and featured in Qatar’s bid for the 2022 tournament in 2010, the women’s national team hasn’t played a game in eight years.

“Lip service is something that happens in most of the countries I’ve been in,” said Monika Staab, current coach of the Saudi Arabia women’s national team.
“We are waiting for the legacy of the World Cup to bring us up. That’s our only hope,” said Hagar Nader Nessim Aziz Saleh, a current player.
