Written By Onyeka Daniel

This weekend, Inter Milan will kick off their Serie A title defense with an away trip to Genoa and the general feeling from the club is that retaining their crown will be seen as the barest minimum for the club while they hope to do better in European competition (the UCL).

More Details

For the coach of the side, Simone Inzaghi, he feels that the aim for next season at Inter Milan will to be to reach the same heights as the 2023-24 season, and he made this known in an interview with SportMediaset ahead of the start of the 2024-25. He stressed the desire to once again win the Serie A title.

Last season, they won the Serie A title. And they did so in dominant fashion, with nearly twenty points separating them from city rivals AC Milan in second in the table. But of course, nothing can be taken for granted. Inter are starting from zero as all the teams are in the league.

But the Nerazzurri do have a strong core of players. And perhaps most importantly of all, the Nerazzurri have a coach who has fully shaped the team in his image in the form of Inzaghi. Inzaghi said that last season’s heroics “Certainly gave us a big boost. “We’ve had a good preseason,” the Inter coach continued.

“Even if this season it’s conditioned by the fact that we have several more matches, with the Club World Cup at the end of the season.” “The players have come back over time from the Euros and the Copa America,” Inzaghi noted. “So our preseason had to work within those conditions. But all the guys have been completely ready to give their all.”

Inzaghi noted that “We’ve had one or two injuries. But it’s just been minor ones.” “Apart from Stefan de Vrij I think I’ll have everyone available for Genoa,” he went on. “I’m happy with what the team’s done in preseason,” he continued. “And now we’re all eagerly anticipating Saturday’s start to the season.”

Of Inter’s summer signings, Inzaghi said that “They’re great additions to the team.”“And they come into a team that was already functioning well.” “They’ll certainly help us with squad rotation in a season that could go to 68 or 69 matches, not including the matches the players have with their national teams.”

“Everyone will be needed,” Inzaghi made clear. “And then I will have to know how to rotate the squad, and which players need to rest when.” The Nerazzurri coach also gave his thoughts on the upcoming Champions League. “It’s a new format,” he noted. “With two more matches in the group stage. “It will be more difficult,” Inzaghi predicted of the new Champions League format.

“There are a lot of teams from other leagues that have higher budgets than we do.” “But two years ago we proved that we can have our say by reaching the final, and then reaching the round of sixteen.” He further added. He’s not the only one thinking in this direction, same as Armenia midfielder, Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The veteran insists Inter have ‘just one way’ to win the Serie A title again this season: ‘We have high motivation.’ The 35-year-old, who has played for the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United In his career, released an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport three days before Inter’s 2024-25 Serie A debut against Genoa at Marassi.

Last season, the Nerazzurri became Italy’s champions for the 20th time in history. “We must do things well and work well even if many players have arrived at different moments,” said Mkhitaryan. “Everyone is doing their best to get in shape and start the new season in the best possible way. Nobody wants to be left behind.

“We are Inter and our target is to lift trophies. We will work to win the Scudetto again. Generally, we want to do more than last season. So the target is to go even more far away in the Champions League. Then we have the Club’s World Cup. It is far away now, but it’s fascinating to think about it,” he said.

As for the transfer window, with just three weeks left, the club will have to move quickly in their bid to sign a defensive cover for Bastoni, and possibly another striker. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the club management has added two new names to the list, Talleres-owned Independiente Rivadiva defender Tomas Palacios and Mikayil Faye of Barcelona.

It is no secret that Inter are trying to sign a defender before the end of the summer transfer window, and there have been a number of possible solutions. There had been the idea of an experienced stopgap solution on a free transfer, but more recently, links have emerged to Nantes defender Nathan Zeze, and Valencia defender Yarek Gasiorowski.

So far, they’ve not done a deal for any of these players. And according to Di Marzio, there are in fact two young defenders in particular who the Nerazzurri are now looking at. One is 21-year-old defender Tomas Palacios. He is currently at Argentine club Independiente Rivadivia, but will revert to being owned by Talleres in a few months.

Then, Di Marzio reports, Inter are also targeting Senegalese international Mikayil Faye. The 20-year-old is currently at Barcelona, having joined the club last summer. To date, Faye has only made appearances for Barcelona’s youth team. But one player that the club might not be signing this summer is Albert Gudmundsson.

Genoa director Andres Blazquez has insisted that the Iceland forward won’t leave until the Grifone sign a valuable replacement and insists that Inter have made no offers, while Fiorentina‘s proposal was rejected.Genoa will only sell Gudmundsson if they can sign a valuable replacement this summer, club director Blazquez told Tuttosport.

“There are offers for Albert, but none have matched our demands,” he said. “I understand his desire to leave at the best moment of his career, but Genoa is the most important thing to us. We can’t let Albert leave until we have a solution that makes us feel good—on the same level or even better. As of today, Albert won’t go.

“We’ve never received a formal offer from Inter. Many clubs are interested. Fiorentina have made an offer, but we didn’t accept it. I think Inter are interested, but there are no offers. If offers are unconvincing and we don’t find an appropriate replacement, we’ll 100% keep Albert. We are happy to keep him and he would not be so disappointed.” He said.
