According to multiple reports, Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, has been tipped as the “leading contender” to succeed Gareth Southgate as England manager.

More Details

After leading the national team for eight years and 102 games, Southgate revealed on Tuesday that he is leaving his position as manager of England. He stated in a statement that “it’s time for change, and for a new chapter.”

A full-time Southgate replacement must be chosen by the FA in less than seven weeks, before England’s September 7 Nations League matchup with the Republic of Ireland.

Potter and Lee Carsley, who now manages England’s Under-21 team and led them to win at the European Under-21 Championship last summer, are reportedly among candidates that the FA is examining.

According to further claims from English media outlets, the FA have not ruled out the possibility of hiring a different foreign coach to succeed Southgate.

Following their departures from Chelsea and Bayern Munich at the end of the previous campaign, Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino are both available at this time.

Although experts have hailed Jurgen Klopp as Southgate’s perfect replacement, the former Liverpool manager has stated that he is eager to take a year off from managing at Anfield.

Another candidate that is now available for England is Frank Lampard. The 46-year-old former Chelsea midfielder made an impression while commentating for the BBC at Euro 2024, and Gary Lineker recommended that the FA take the player into consideration.
