Following Chelsea’s narrow 3-2 loss to Arsenal in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, manager Liam Rosenior provided a fitness update on his squad. Although the Blues were defeated at Stamford Bridge, they remain competitive heading into the return fixture.

More Details

The match saw Arsenal capitalize on two mistakes by goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, allowing the visitors to build a two-goal cushion. However, substitute Alejandro Garnacho struck back to bring Chelsea within one.

While Martin Zubimendi briefly restored Arsenal’s two-goal advantage, a vital save from Sanchez prevented further damage before Garnacho netted his second of the night. This late goal ensures the Blues travel to the Emirates Stadium for the second leg trailing by only a single goal.

Following this match, Chelsea enters a grueling stretch of fixtures, beginning with a Premier League clash against Brentford. Their schedule continues with a Champions League encounter with Pafos, a league game against Crystal Palace, a European showdown with Napoli, and finally a London derby against West Ham.

With this demanding period approaching, Rosenior addressed the status of several key players currently sidelined or returning to fitness as they aim to reintegrate into the squad.

In his comments to Sky Sports regarding Cole Palmer, Rosenior explained that the player wasn’t quite ready for the most recent match. However, he is optimistic that Palmer will return to training this Friday and be fit enough to feature in Saturday’s game.

“He had a little minor strain in his leg. If you play a player too early in January with a minor strain, it can turn into six weeks. I cannot afford to lose Cole Palmer for six weeks.”

He added on Reece James and Jamie Gittens: “Reece had a big knock on his hip. It was too sore for him today. Hopefully, he’ll be back on Saturday.

“Considering those two are out, Jamie Gittins was ill last night – he was set to play today but was ill four hours before the game, he couldn’t play – Moises Caicedo was suspended, Malo Gusto was out, there’s a lot of positive aspects.”
