Looking to bounce back after a tough loss to Toluca, the Columbus Crew secured a crucial 3-1 victory against Puebla.

More Details

This win keeps the reigning Leagues Cup champions in contention as they aim to advance past the first round and defend their title.

“We stayed on task and did well,” head coach Wilfried Nancy said after the game. “We wanted to get better in certain things, try to score more goals and also defend better.

“I really liked the energy that we had and that’s why we did what we did tonight.”

After losing their previous game in a penalty shootout, the Crew got a much-needed win. In that prior match, they had given up a 2-0 lead and star forward Diego Rossi missed two crucial penalty kicks—one at the end of regulation and another in the shootout.

However, Rossi redeemed himself in a big way during Friday’s game, scoring a goal and providing an assist. His goal in the 16th minute also tied him for third all-time in Leagues Cup goals.

“He was so sad after the last game,” Nancy said of Rossi. “For me, I don’t believe in luck. He has the best work ethic on the team. I’m really happy for him because he deserved it tonight.”

After Tuesday’s tough loss, the Crew really stepped up and played their best as a team when it mattered most. Their coach, Nancy, mentioned that they successfully matched Puebla’s high level of fitness and intensity.

“I’m not surprised about [our] reaction,” he said. “To play with the same intensity three days later, I am really proud of my team.”
