Despite being with the team for nearly two years, Manchester United star Antony “needs time” to adjust to the Premier League, according to Ryan Babel.

Although United paid a hefty £86 million to acquire Antony from Ajax in 2022, the Brazilian winger has had a terrible season.

Across 27 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils in 2023–24, Antony has only managed one goal and one assist. The 24-year-old has come under fire for inciting the Coventry City players during the FA Cup, despite his best efforts to divert attention away from his subpar play.

However, Babel, a former teammate of Antony’s at Liverpool, has defended the winger and believes he can still develop into a “great” player for United.

‘A player like Antony needs time to adapt in England,’ Babel told Ladbrokes Fanzone.

‘He’s 24 now, and I think he learned a lot – the hard way – this season. The gap between Holland and the Premier League is massive.

‘So the things that have worked for him in the Eredivisie, haven’t necessarily worked for him in England. I definitely believe he’s learned things the hard way, but he’ll soon be able to reset and prepare again for next season.’

According to reports, Premier League clubs have approved the introduction of a development plan that will curb spending beginning with the 2025–2026 season.

The spending cap proposals were approved by 16 teams, and their goal is to keep the gap between the Premier League’s lower-half teams and its financial titans from growing.

Nevertheless, a report from BBC Sport claims that three teams vying for European football—Manchester United, Manchester City, and Aston Villa—are thought to have voted against the proposal.
