The attacking midfielder, who is 28 years old, was approaching the end of his current deal. Gauld, a designated player, earned $2.5 million last season, making him the highest-paid player in Vancouver.

In 42 games, including 40 starts, Gauld recorded a team-high 17 assists in addition to 12 goals as Vancouver advanced to the postseason for the second time in the previous three years.

The Whitecaps signed Gauld in July of 2021. Since then, in 94 games across all competitions, he has contributed 34 assists and 26 goals.

“Since joining the club in the summer of 2021, Ryan has been the creative force behind our attack and one of the league’s best players,” Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster said in a statement.

“He has helped us push forward as a club by making the MLS Cup playoffs twice and winning two Canadian Championships, all while bringing a top level of professionalism to the locker-room every day.”

In addition to winning the George Gross Memorial Trophy in 2022 as the MVP of the Canadian Championship, Gauld was voted the Whitecaps player of the year in 2022 and 2023.
