Saint Louis City SC Dismiss Head Coach Mellberg

Written by Patrick Echatah

Saint Louis City SC have announced the contract termination of Olof Mellberg’s tenure as head coach, effective Tuesday evening.

More Details

The responsibilities of the first-team manager will be assumed by David Critchley, the current head coach of their MLS NEXT Pro affiliate, St Louis City 2, during the club’s search for a new permanent appointment.

This change in leadership occurs after 15 MLS regular season matches, in which St. Louis has recorded 11 points (two wins, eight losses, five draws), positioning them 14th in the Western Conference.

Their offensive performance has been among the league’s lowest with 11 goals scored, and their once-strong defense, which began the season with four consecutive shutouts, has become inconsistent.

This past November, Mellberg’s took the coaching position after managing IF Brommapojkarna, a top-tier team in his native Sweden. Before moving into management, Mellberg had a distinguished career as a defender for both club teams and his national side.

“The decision to part ways with Olof goes beyond just results,” said sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel.

“We’ve analyzed the team’s performance across a number of factors, including the need to execute against a style of play that led to the team’s initial success and has been part of our DNA for four years.

“As a club, we have certain standards we need to meet and believe a coaching change was necessary to improve our overall performance and return to a winning culture. Our fans deserve a better performing team and we intend to give them one.”
