Sam Coffey’s USWNT Absence Fuels Manchester City Transfer Speculation
The absence of Portland Thorns midfielder Sam Coffey from the latest United States Women’s National Team roster has sparked growing speculation that the 27-year-old is on the verge of a high-profile move to the Women’s Super League.
More Details
According to a report by ESPN on Thursday, WSL leaders Manchester City are finalising a deal for Coffey, with the base transfer fee expected to be around $800,000, a figure that could rise once add-ons and performance-related clauses are triggered.
Coffey, however, remains under contract with the Thorns until 2027, having signed a contract extension in 2024.
Her omission from Emma Hayes’ most recent squad has therefore intensified rumours that a transfer is nearing completion rather than raising concerns over form or fitness.

Since being selected in the 2021 NWSL Draft, Coffey has established herself as one of Portland’s most consistent performers and a key figure in midfield.
Her reliability, tactical intelligence, and ball-winning ability have also made her a regular presence with the USWNT, where she is regarded as one of the team’s most dependable holding midfielders.
A move to England would see Coffey follow a growing trend of US internationals testing themselves in Europe.

She would potentially join fellow Americans Alyssa Thompson, Emily Fox, Phallon Tullis-Joyce, and Naomi Girma in the WSL, further underlining the league’s increasing appeal to elite US talent.
Manchester City, currently sitting six points clear of defending champions Chelsea at the top of the WSL table, have reportedly been in the market for a specialist defensive midfielder. Sources told ESPN that the club identified Coffey as “the right defensive midfield option” as they push for their first league title since 2016.
While neither Portland Thorns nor Manchester City have officially confirmed the move, all indications suggest that Coffey could soon be set for a major new chapter in her career — one that may explain her notable absence from this month’s USWNT squad.
