Against all the odds, San Diego FC won their inaugural MLS match against LA Galaxy in February.

More Details

A year ago, it seemed impossible that an expansion team could beat the reigning champions on their home turf, especially since the champs hadn’t lost there in over a year. Yet, that surprising victory wasn’t a fluke; it was a foreshadowing of things to come.

Now, the tables have turned dramatically. San Diego FC have emerged as one of Major League Soccer’s top teams, while the Galaxy are at the bottom of the league, still searching for their first win of the 2025 season.

This makes their title defense one of the worst in American sports history. As these burgeoning rivals face off again on Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium, they do so with vastly different standings.

SDFC are strongly favored to win, and for good reason. Despite this, the newer team claims they aren’t feeling pressured to avoid becoming the first team to lose to the league’s last-place team.

“I don’t see it that way. They’re still a really good team,” says SDFC goalie CJ dos Santos. “They won the league last year and every single year they’re always a top contender. We’re going to go after them like anyone that we would face on any given matchday. They’re the champions until 2026.”

“CJ said it perfectly: they’re champs until somebody else wins a final,” says SDFC head coach Mikey Varas.

“They’ll have eight to nine guys starting the match that won MLS Cup and they probably have marked this game on their calendar for a while, especially after the first game of the season. So, they’re going to come with everything and they’re a very good team.”

LA Galaxy’s challenge is that SDFC is also a formidable team, a fact that has become widely recognized throughout Major League Soccer.
