The 23-year-old comes from Godoy Cruz, a top-tier team in Argentina. His deal runs through the 2026 Major League Baseball season, with 2027–2028 options.

San Jose reportedly paid a club record $6 million in transfer fees to get López. Carlos Gruezo, an Ecuadorian international midfielder, was part of their previous club record transaction, which reportedly cost almost $3 million.

“We’re excited to announce the signing of a top-level player like Hernán López and welcome him to San Jose,” Earthquakes general manager Chris Leitch said in a release.

“To bring in a dynamic central playmaker of his caliber for what will be the prime of his career demonstrates that we are willing to invest at a higher level than ever before. He not only fits the mold for our long-term project but will make an immediate impact when he steps on the field.”

Playing primarily as a No. 10, Lopez becomes a part of an attacking group that includes wingers Cristian Espinoza and Amahl Pellegrino, as well as striker Jeremy Ebobisse. Pellegrino was signed by the Earthquakes in February from Norwegian top division team Bodø/Glimt, which helped counterbalance Cade Cowell’s club-record transfer to Liga MX powerhouse Chivas.

Diego Gomez’s ankle injury versus Nashville SC has been a major blow to Inter Miami head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino’s team.

The 21-year-old was carried off the ground in tears after suffering the injury during the first half of the game against the Coyotes. Gomez, who left Libertad of Paraguay to join Miami last summer, has had a fantastic season. Prior to the injury, he had two goals and five assists in MLS games.

“Gomez suffered a high-grade ankle sprain in the first half of Inter Miami’s win over Nashville SC on Saturday. He has begun the recovery process and is expected to be sidelined for approximately six weeks,” the club said in a release.
