Sandro Tonali’s Fate To Be Decided Soon As Informant Faces More Charges
Written By Onyeka Daniel
It has been revealed that Sandro Tonali’s lawyers aim to get a ten-month suspension for the Newcastle and Italy midfielder who is expected to learn the ban’s length before the Magpies’ next Champions League game on Wednesday.
More Details
Tonali’s lawyers met FIGC Prosecutor Giuseppe Chiné yesterday to negotiate a plea bargain for his client who has reportedly admitted to gambling on Milan and Brescia while under contract with the two clubs so he will likely get a longer ban than Nicolò Fagioli. However, Tonali is not accused of match-fixing having allegedly gambled on Milan and Brescia to win.
According to the report, his lawyers hope to reach an agreement over a 10-month ban, but Chiné has demanded a higher suspension. Therefore, the two parties could eventually agree on a one-year ban for the 23-year-old. Another report has it that there is a ‘clear path’ leading to an agreement between Chiné and Tonali’s lawyers.

But both report seems to confirm that Tonali will likely learn the length of his ban before Wednesday’s Champions League game between Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund. The FIGC Prosecutor has reportedly accepted to offer a plea bargain to Tonali as the Italian midfielder has assisted the relevant authorities and has sought help to treat his gambling addiction.
There’s a speculation that Tonali will have to go without pay during his suspension, while also suggesting that he runs the risk of having to train individually for the duration of his looming suspension. Tonali was available to Newcastle for their Premier League encounter with Crystal Palace at St James’ Park over the weekend.
He made a second half appearance when he entered for Bruno Guimaraes in the 4-0, but it is expected that this will be his final appearance of the season for the Magpies. Tonali’s case is different to that of Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli, who was handed a seven-month ban by the authorities last week for his role in the betting scandal.
According to report, Juventus did not suspend their player’s salary. However, it is believed that Newcastle will not have to pay Tonali during his ban. It is estimated that Tonali agreed an annual wage packet of €8m plus bonuses at the time of his signing from Milan during the summer transfer window.
The most recent reference point for betting-related suspensions in the Premier League is that of Brentford and England striker Ivan Toney, who was handed a 15-month suspension, later reduced to eight months at the back end of the 2022-23 season. For the first four months of Toney’s ban, he was unable to train with the rest of the rest of the Brentford squad and it is suggested that Tonali runs the risk of facing the same punishment.

Gossip columnist Fabrizio Corona has been put under investigation by the Milan Prosecutor for suspected defamation based on libel suits filed by Stephan El Shaarawy and Nicolò Casale’s lawyers.
Corona has been sued by representatives of the two Serie A players who had been mentioned among those involved in a betting scandal in Italy. Corona named El Shaarawy and Casale in his latest interview with Striscia La Notizia last week.

Lawyers of the Roma striker and the Lazio defender had claimed they would take legal action against Corona. He also accused Inter Milan midfielder, Nicolo Barella, but quickly apologized after the player had threatened to take legal actions. The ex ‘King of Paparazzi’ was the first to reveal Nicolò Fagioli, Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Fagioli were investigated by the FIGC and Turin Prosecutors in a betting scandal.
El Shaarawy and Casale are not under investigation, so their lawyers have now taken legal action against Corona, reports Italian press agency Ansa. El Shaarawy broke into tears after scoring a late winner in Roma’s win over Monza on Sunday. “It did hurt because it hurts when things are said about you that are not true, even if your conscience is clear,” said the Italy international.
