Sean Johnson has joined D.C. United as a free agent. The club confirmed the move on Tuesday, noting that his contract runs until the summer of 2027.

The 36-year-old goalkeeper brings a wealth of experience to the pitch, having appeared in more than 400 MLS regular-season games.



Most recently, he completed a three-year tenure with Toronto FC following successful runs with Chicago Fire FC and New York City FC, where he helped secure the MLS Cup title in 2021.

On the international stage, Johnson’s career is highlighted by his inclusion in the United States roster for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

“Sean is an experienced and proven goalkeeper who has consistently performed at a high level throughout his career,” said Dr. Erkut Sogut, D.C. United managing director of soccer operations.

“He brings valuable international experience having represented the US men’s national team, and his leadership and competitive mentality will elevate our entire team.

“Sean is a proven winner having won the 2021 MLS Cup with New York, and we look forward to welcoming him to the Black-and-Red family.”

As D.C. United prepares for the 2026 MLS season, the club is navigating a transformative offseason—the first led by Managing Director of Soccer Operations Erkut Sogut and Head Coach René Weiler.

In addition to signing goalkeeper Sean Johnson, the Black-and-Red have bolstered their squad by trading for Philadelphia Union striker Tai Baribo and acquiring center back Sean Nealis from the New York Red Bulls.
