Seattle Sounders Suffer Josh Atencio Blow As Midfielder Picks Up Injury

Written by Patrick Echatah

Since Atencio “tweaked” something during Wednesday’s U.S. Open Cup game, the Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer stated that Atencio would at least miss the Portland Timbers game, even though it’s not thought to be too serious and he should recover fairly fast.

“It’s a little tweak, it’s not bad,” Schmetzer said. “It’s not horrible, but he’s not going to play against Portland.”

The good news is that Atencio probably wasn’t going to start against the Timbers anyways, as the Sounders have a fair number of defensive midfielders on their roster.

João Paulo and Obed Vargas are the most likely midfield duo, but Schmetzer also mentioned Sota Kitahara, Danny Leyva, and Cristian Roldan as potential substitutes.

“We’ve got talented midfielders,” Schmetzer said. “We have plenty of options.”

With the exception of Atencio, the Sounders emerged from the Louisville City game in a fairly decent state. Schmetzer stated that the majority of the players who did not play the full 120 minutes were substituted due to cramps or in order to conserve their legs.

Brazilian winger Célio Pompeu has signed a new deal with St. Louis CITY SC, the team announced on Friday

With a club option for 2027, the 24-year-old Brazilian is now signed through the 2026 MLS season.

“We are proud to see Célio’s growth through our pipeline”, sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel said in a press release. “He has grown as a professional, both on and off the field, and to reap the rewards with a new contract was something he worked really hard for. Celio continues to elevate his game each and every day and we hope that he doesn’t stop raising the bar.”
