Serena Williams Flips The Script

After she missed the deadline for a protected ranking entry into Wimbledon, concerns that Serena Williams might be slowly backing away from the sport of tennis appear to have been overblown.

More Details

Williams, listed as a wild-card entry into the Grand Slam, posted about her return on Instagram on Tuesday.
Williams has not played in a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) match since an ankle injury forced her to withdraw from Wimbledon in 2021.

Wild-card entries frequently favour the home country of a particular Slam, and Williams joined five British players on the list: Katie Boulter, Jodie Burrage, Sonay Kartal, Yuriko Miyazaki, and Katie Swan.

Williams appeared to confirm the entry on social media, posting “SW and SW19. It’s a date. 2022, see you there,” on her Instagram. SW19 is a nickname for Wimbledon, in reference to the All England Tennis Club postal code.

Wimbledon also made a statement on Twitter: “The stage awaits. Our 7-time champion Serena Williams will return to Wimbledon as a wild card this summer for her 21st appearance.”

Williams will also be teaming up with Ons Jabeur in the doubles competition.

The timeline for Williams’ return has come with snippets of information, including cryptic social media posts and a coaching change.

Williams’ longtime coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, began working with 2019 champion Simona Halep in April. He said that conversations with Williams opened the door for him to work with someone else.

That same month, Williams teased a Wimbledon comeback in a video with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Despite missing the initial Wimbledon entry window, Williams has never publicly commented on considering retirement.

Every tournament Williams participates in is a big deal, and leave it to us to overanalyze the tea leaves. If we’ve learned anything during her career, Williams will make announcements when she’s ready, and we all benefit from getting to see the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) in action again in 2022.
