2022 Euro winner with England and Lionesses legend, Ellen White has warned that the country’s Women World Cup dream may be over without key player, Keira Walsh, admitting that she dreaded losing her to injury at last summer’s Euros because she’s irreplaceable.
More Details
England midfielder Keira Walsh was taken off the pitch on a stretcher in the 38th minute during the World Cup match against Denmark in Sydney after the Barcelona player appeared to hurt her knee and looked in distress before signaling to the bench that she could not carry on in big blow to manager Sarina Wiegman.
The 26 year old in tears appeared to have communicated – “I’ve done my knee” as she was comforted by team-mates.
Writing for BBC Sport, former England striker White has opened up on how damaging losing Walsh will be for the Lionesses in the World Cup.
In her writing, she revealed: “At the 2022 Euros everything came through Keira. There wasn’t a Plan B.”
“I dreaded to think of the idea of us ever losing her because she was one of our best players. Beth Mead was scoring all the goals but all of our play came through Keira.”
“She was the key cog, everything moved through her,”
She further stated that she doesn’t believe England have a ready made replacement for Walsh – “I just don’t know who England are going to have now in that six, or even potential double six, role.”
Manager Sarina Wiegman said afterwards: “Of course I’m concerned because she couldn’t walk off the pitch but we don’t know yet so we can’t make any assumptions. Let’s wait until we have a diagnosis then I can tell you.”
Meanwhile…
England have just one Lioness in the Women’s World Cup highest paid list at the tournament this summer, with the USWNT dominating the rankings in the list released by Spanish outlet Marca, which includes 15 athletes at the tournament with Vlatko Andonovski boasting of 11 stars in the release.
Manchester City forward, Chloe Kelly who scored the winning goal at the Women’s Euro 2022 tournament for England is the only Lioness on the list.
