Alan Shearer believes Chelsea faces a significant stumbling block compared to their Premier League competitors in the fight to secure a Champions League spot.

More Details

Even though the Premier League title seemed to be a two-horse race between Liverpool and Arsenal, the battle for the remaining European qualification places is very tight.

As it stands, the Premier League table is incredibly tight between third and seventh, with only five points separating these teams.

This gap could shrink to just two points depending on the results of the upcoming matches: if Chelsea wins against Fulham on Sunday and Nottingham Forest fails to win against Tottenham on Monday.

The race for a top-five finish, which guarantees a spot in next season’s Champions League, involves Newcastle United, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, and Chelsea.

Even though many thought the Blues would easily secure a spot to compete for the championship around Christmas time, their performance has significantly declined. Because of this slump, Shearer thinks they’re facing a tough period in the coming weeks, and their qualification is no longer assured.

‘Looking at the fixtures, there’s no doubt in my mind that Chelsea have the toughest run-in,’ the legendary striker told Premier League Productions.

‘The league might be done for Liverpool. Obviously Newcastle is a huge one.

‘And that last game against Nottingham Forest, they could be playing for everything, who gets a Champions League place. So that for me is the toughest run-in.’

Enzo Maresca’s squad faces a challenging schedule, including Premier League matches against Everton, and Manchester United. They also have a two-legged Conference League semi-final tie against Swedish club Djurgardens to contend with.
