In a big revelation today, shocking details of Antoine Griezmann’s big money move to Barcelona from Atletico Madrid including three other players has emerged under former president Josep Maria Bartomeu with his shady dealings putting the club in a big financial mess which has largely affected their dealings under Joan Laporta with the latest been the €15m payment Diego Simeone’s side reportedly forced Barcelona into.

More Details

As time goes on and more details of Bartomeu’s management are revealed as it gets more bad for the Catalan outfits off the pitch due to past frivolous spending and big money deals that didn’t yield the respected results.

The Blaugrana ended up paying Griezmann’s release clause in 2019 which amounted to €120m. However previously, in 2018, Barcelona had tried to sign the French star too with Griezmann publicly rejecting them in his ‘The Decision’ documentary as culled from Football Espana.

But before they made an offer for Griezmann, Atletico Madrid threatened to reveal emails they had obtained from Barcelona to the player’s sister, who serves as his attorney.

According to MD, the final agreement was for Barcelona and Bartomeu to keep their correspondence private in exchange for paying €15 million for the first choice on five Atletico players, including Saul Niguez and Jose Maria Gimenez, as well as three additional young players.

Barcelona has never made advantage of those choices, which let them have an offer approved if it matches one that has already been accepted. When Luis Suarez moved to Atletico Madrid in 2020, they did receive a €5 million discount off the €15 million, but after deducting that €10 million, Barcelona had to pay €130 million for the Griezmann transaction.

In the meantime, it is noted that Atletico agreed to pay him €20 million plus an additional €4 million in variables last summer, making the Blaugrana’s total expenses—including his €38 million annual gross salary—an astounding €53–55 million every season.

Barcelona chose not to include the €40 million option in Griezmann’s original deal, instead lowering it to €24 million all-in for Atletico last summer due to the amortisation charges of €27 million and that contract.

Wednesday’s Europa League match between Villarreal and Maccabi Haifa at La Ceramica was a frustrating evening for the team as they were unable to secure all three points. They will be worried, though, about Alex Baena, their great midfield player, who left the game at halftime.

The 22-year-old played through halftime despite taking a blow to the face during the match. Yet, he was quickly removed from the game and brought to the hospital for additional testing after claiming to be dizzy in the changing room.

According to Relevo, manager Marcelino Garcia Toral provided that as the final update following the game. Since then, no additional information has been released.
