Signing Lewandowski Could Create Problems Inside Barcelona’s Dressing Room As The Club Considers An Alternative Signing

Written By Onyeka Daniel
Since last season’s summer transfer window, Barcelona have been enmeshed in a financial struggle that has left them taking some measures to remain competitive.
More Details
Those measures ended up costing them in the just concluded season as they failed to cope with the departure of Lionel Messi.
The problems doesn’t seem to have gone away this time around as the club have struggled to even register the players that they have reached an agreement with to join the club on a free transfer.

Notwithstanding, the club are still going ahead with their transfer activities as they’re actively in negotiations with Bayern Munich to sign their Polish striker, Robert Lewandowski.
The player had already stated publicly that he would like to leave the German side and also his willingness to join Barcelona, while Bayern were initially reluctant to let him leave but have decided to cash in on him with one year left on his contract with the club.
Reports have also suggested that the Poland international has already agreed terms over a €9 million per year contract with the Blaugrana. A transfer fee with Bayern Munich is yet to be negotiated but Barça are confident of getting their man this summer.
While Lewandowski’s signing will no doubt be a huge coup, it might lead to some issues within the dressing room due to the wages. Barcelona president, Joan Laporta had enforced pay cuts on players during the summer of last year in order to be able to register new players.
The club captains – Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba and Sergi Roberto were the first ones to accept the reduction in wages. There are reports that the veteran stars are puzzled about the fact that the club keep asking players to forego part of their salaries while having the budget to bring in new players of Robert Lewandowski’s calibre.
Barcelona are also reported to be owing Pique a sum of around €50 million in deferred salary payments. So, it is natural for the player to feel disgruntled over the situation, although he is yet to make any fuss over the situation. It is still unclear how the club intend to go about the situation.
Meanwhile…
Barcelona could move for Villarreal striker, Gerard Moreno if the club fail in their bid to sign Lewandowski as the club come to grip with their financial situation that has greatly slowed down their transfer activities.

It is very much obvious that Lewandowski remains the top choice, but it is absolutely normal to always have a backup plan and for Barca, it is Moreno. For Moreno, his current Villarreal contract runs until 2027 having only signed an extension in August 2021.
Also, the Spanish striker currently has a release clause of €100 million, but he can be available for a fee of about €40 million, same fee as Lewandowski. While the Polish striker is superior in terms of quality, the Spanish striker is 30yrs old, unlike Lewandowski, who is approaching 34yrs.
