Chelsea FC Women head coach Sonia Bompastor has explained why stepping away from familiar surroundings is the ideal way to prepare for an intense second half of the season.

Reflecting on the recent break, Bompastor emphasised the importance of mental and physical renewal for both players and staff.

“It was a really good break. I think it’s always important, when you have the chance, to reset mentally and physically,” she said.
“Our job is really demanding as coaches, and it’s the same for the players. It was a great opportunity to reset and to come back with freshness and a new mindset.”

With a demanding run of fixtures ahead, the Chelsea boss believes the timing and setting of the camp are crucial.

“We know the importance of the next block of matches. We will have a lot of big games to play, and I think this is the best place to come and prepare for the second part of the season.”

Bompastor highlighted that the camp goes beyond tactical work, focusing heavily on culture, values, and relationships within the squad.

“We work on a lot of things, but especially our values, the environment we want to create, and the culture we want in this team,” she explained.

“It allows you to get to know each other well. The chemistry you can gain off the pitch is really valuable and allows us to connect as humans.”

Training in a different environment, she added, helps players step outside their comfort zones and sharpen their focus.

“It’s really important for us to have training sessions in a different environment, for people to be mentally in a good space and to work outside their comfort zones,” Bompastor said.

“These elements form the foundations for the second part of the season, and that’s crucial.”

While the squad has already begun to gel, Bompastor stressed the need for continuous work in building cohesion.

“The team has been working together for a few months now and the players are gelling, but it’s important to keep working on that.”

She also noted that the camp provides valuable time for the coaching staff to align on objectives and long-term vision.

“For the staff, it’s an opportunity to talk about the game model and what we want to achieve—our goals and ambitions—and to make sure we’re on the same page and moving in the same direction.”

As Chelsea prepare for a pivotal stretch of the season, Bompastor believes the foundations being laid now will prove decisive in the months ahead.
