Spanish And Italian Clubs Will Be The Most Affected By The New FIFA Rule

Written By Onyeka Daniel

As from today, July 1st, new FIFA rules come into effect, with regards to loaning out of players by clubs and from all indications, the top European clubs will be the most affected.

More Details

Clubs will be allowed to loan a maximum of 3 players from one club and will only be permitted to loan 8 players in total.

The exceptions to those rules are for players aged 21 and under, as well as those who qualify as homegrown. The rules are aimed at preventing the stockpiling of talent and the use of other clubs as a feeder for larger or primary clubs.

While this new rule is meant to help clubs rely more on their academies, it is also detrimental to some other developing clubs, who usually rely on the loaning of players from the bigger clubs to be able to compete.

Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid had 26 and 24 players out on loan last season. Atalanta had 65 players on loan in the same period. Inter Milan also had close to 20 players out on loan last season.

Chelsea seems to be the biggest culprit from the English Premier League. These new rules will impact on top clubs too directly as some clubs tend to buy young players for a cheap price, loan them out and see how they fare, before deciding whether to bring them back or sell them off.

The case of Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah quickly comes to mind as they were with Chelsea as young players before being loaned out and made a name for themselves, earning them a move to direct rivals of the Blues (Manchester City and Liverpool).

Meanwhile…

Real Madrid are close to reaching an agreement with Italian side, Fiorentina over the transfer of Serbian striker, Luka Jovic on a one year loan deal, with no loan fee involved and each club paying a part (half) of his €6 million a year salary.

Signed from Eintracht Frankfurt in 2019, the striker has struggled for playing time and it’s quite understandable, because of the presence of Karim Benzema, but he still has a contract with the Los Blancos until 2025.

Only the final details remain to be completed before the official announcement. The player could be in Florence as early as next week to undergo his medical tests and sign his new contract.
