Written by Oluwadamilola Olaleye
There have been calls of efficiency in terms of officiating in Spain with the controversies and VAR drama during Espanyol’s game with Real Madrid last month rocking various news outlets front page. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez didn’t take the situation lightly with the club releasing footage of the foul against Kylian Mbappe which was later followed by an official letter to the Royal Spanish Football Federation(RFEF) to voice their grievances, a move that angered some La Liga club owners and also president Javier Tebas.

Real Madrid’s long-standing strained relationship with Spanish football’s refereeing bodies has recently deteriorated further, exacerbated by the ongoing “Negreira case.” This scandal, involving FC Barcelona and the former vice president of the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA)has ignited a virtual “war” within Real Madrid. The club’s board, led by Florentino Pérez has repeatedly called for a complete overhaul of the current refereeing system.
Following their initial complaint, La Liga has escalated the matter by formally submitting a complaint to the Competition Committee regarding Real Madrid’s letter. This action could result in disciplinary measures against Los Blancos. Undeterred by this potential fallout, Real Madrid is scheduled to present its proposal for a new refereeing system next week.

Real Madrid will present its own proposed reforms for Spanish refereeing as per Cadena SER. Following their previous letter demanding the dismissal of any referees involved during the period in question with José María Enríquez Negreira, the former Vice President of the Referees Committee currently under investigation for sporting corruption, their new proposal will focus on transparency.
Specifically, Real Madrid will advocate for making the conversations within the Video Operation Room (VOR), where VAR decisions are made, publicly accessible.

“El Larguero” by host Manu Carreño on Cadena stated that Real Madrid will present a proposal next week aimed at improving the refereeing system acknowledging the uncertainty of its acceptance, saying, “Real Madrid is going to present it, we don’t know if anyone will buy it.” The plan is reportedly the result of a thorough study of refereeing systems in Europe’s top leagues.
“Madrid is going to present a new system that we’ll see if anyone likes or dislikes,” Carreño commented, predicting that LaLiga president Javier Tebas, given his strained relationship with Real Madrid will likely disapprove.
Carreño anticipates the plan will focus on transparency, specifically making conversations within the VOR room public, “whether the play is whistled or not,” to preempt misunderstandings and suspicions. A key element of Real Madrid’s proposal will reportedly be the acknowledgment of refereeing errors when they occur, recognizing that referees, like players, are fallible. This initiative from Real Madrid has further intensified the ongoing debate surrounding refereeing.
