With the introduction of the new format of the FIFA Club World Cup, it also brings with it a whole new problem, especially when we consider the fact that this new tournament will be taking place during the summer of 2025, creating an issue with clubs that would be participating in the tournament, the players, and their contracts.

It is for this reason that the Italian football federation, the FIGC with remarkable speed, accepted the Lega Serie A proposal to set up an extra transfer window for the next summer transfer to register players for the Club World Cup, but it is not final yet.It only emerged this afternoon that the request had been made and it was accepted within hours by the Italian Football Federation.

FIFA had already worked to allow this to go ahead in various countries affected by the unusual timing of the Club World Cup in 2025. As it runs from June to mid-July, quite a few clubs will end up with players whose contracts or loan deals expire midway through the tournament. Inter and Juventus have qualified to represent Italy at the new and expanded version of the competition.

The situation Is not final yet in Italy, but it does open up discussion on the exact details of how this will work. The mini-window runs from June 1-10, 2025. This measure will be valid for all clubs in Serie A and not just those who are in the Club World Cup. It remains to be seen how it will affect players on loan or those whose contracts are coming to a close.

But it should enable clubs to register new players as early as June 1 rather than wait for July 1. In a related development, Lyon and France U21 star Rayan Cherki is understood to be eligible to represent the Italy national team at senior level, and the Italian delegation have reportedly made contacts with their French counterparts in an attempt to get him to play for Luciano Spalletti rather than Didier Deschamps.

The 21-year-old has earned 20 caps for France’s U21 side, scoring 12 goals in the process. He also scored twice and featured in every game during the Olympic Games in Paris over the summer, however, he is yet to receive a call-up to the senior France national team. Though only 21 years of age, Cherki is already an experienced head in Ligue 1, having made his professional debut as a 16-year-old back in 2019.

He has already made 152 appearances for Lyon’s senior side, including 123 in the league. He is also Lyon’s youngest ever goalscorer, having found the net at the age of 16 years and 140 days. The grandparent in question is reportedly of Puglian origins. According to a report from French outlet RMC, the Italian delegation took advantage of Italy U21s recent 2-2 draw with France, during which Cherki scored, to discuss the possibility of convincing him to play for the Azzurri with his representatives.
