Coming into the fixture, Al Akhdoud had won just one of their last six, losing the other five.

Al Ettifaq also arrived with a similar run of results with a single win from seven, last three of which were draws.

It was obviously a battle of strugglers but it was the home side who managed to turn things around thanks to Andrei Burca’s 73rd minute effort.

The result puts further misery on the Dammam based club whose coach is now under serious pressure to retain his job.

Martin Sevela will be delighted to see his side move out of the relegation zone albeit on superior goals aggregate.

Al Tai also moved clear of the drop zone with an unexpected 1-0 victory away to Al Fateh.

Bernard Mensah converted from the spot in the 87th minute to hand his side their first consecutive victory this season.

After starting the season in an incredible fashion, Al Taawoun have fallen off in recent weeks.

The Chamusca led side on seven of the opening nine fixtures to lay an early claim to the title run in.

However, a run of five games without a win saw then drop significantly in the title race which caused them to drop to fifth.

The victory over Al Shabab, another side who have now gone without a win in three would help Al Taawoun regain confidence as the season approaches its halfway point.

Elsewhere, Joao Pedro was the hero as his brace cancelled Yannick Carrasco’s opener from the spot.

A goal in either half ensured Al Raed picked up their second victory in three after going eight without a win.

Mohammed Fouzair from the spot just before halftime and Amir Sayoud in the second half gave Igor Jovicevic’s side maximum points.

They however remain in the drop zone despite the victory but moved significantly closer to 15th place.
