There seems to be some tension growing amongst Serie A clubs recently with factions forming, based on common interest. It all started with the abolishing of the Growth Decree, with some feeling that it would affect them and their ability to attract some of the best talents from other Leagues.

Then there was another incident when the big clubs tried to push a directive that would see the number of teams in the League reduced from 20 to 18 and this idea was summarily rejected by the mid-table and smaller clubs. Now, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus and Roma have all taken a stand against Lega Serie A president Lorenzo Casini.

The four clubs have been pushing for major reforms in Italian football. This includes the return of an 18-team Serie A league, and the top Italian clubs believe this adjustment would increase the competitiveness of the league as well as the profits. It would also lighten their schedule which is becoming increasingly overpacked, especially with the introduction of the new Champions League format next season.

These four clubs have been discussing these suggested reforms with Italian sports minister Andrea Abodi over the last few months. The parties will also have a meeting this afternoon. However, Inter and their allies do not want to be represented by Lega Serie A president Casini. The latter has the backing of Lazio president Claudio Lotito and the majority of the top-flight clubs.

Therefore, the Nerazzurri and the other three top clubs feel that Casini hasn’t been acting in their best interest. The four clubs have sent the Serie A chief a letter to inform him of the matter, explains Il Corriere dello Sport. “Dear President, following yesterday’s informal meeting, we wish to inform you of the following,” reads the letter.

“During the meeting, you made several references to positions you represent in institutional bodies founded based on the document approved by the LNPA Assembly on 14 February. “Our clubs have not approved that document, nor its contents, starting from tomorrow’s meeting with the Minister of Sport, as in any other institutional context in which you will represent the positions of the Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A based on that document.

“Therefore, we wish to clarify that our clubs do not share or approve your positions.” The statement further read. It will add to the long list of disagreements that has been brewing in the league after the clubs unanimously rejected the idea of setting up an independent body to help check the financial status of clubs before the season kicks off.

Meanwhile…

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports Stefano Pioli is the ‘chosen one’ for the Napoli job, so Aurelio De Laurentiis is ready to offer the Milan coach a two-year contract. The Milan boss is the leading candidate to take over at Napoli in 2024-25 and the Partenopei are ready to offer the Parma-born tactician a two-year deal with an option for a further campaign and a salary of €3m per season, according to Gazzetta.

Pioli currently earns €4.5m per season at the Stadio Meazza, but he is expected to negotiate a severance pay with Milan given that the Rossoneri seem willing to part company with him at the end of the season. The report claims that this is the most ‘complicated’ aspect of the deal given that Pioli hasn’t yet sat down with Milan directors and, therefore, Napoli haven’t yet made a formal offer.

Corriere dello Sport confirms Pioli is a candidate for the job at the Stadio Maradona, but the report claims Gian Piero Gasperini is De Laurentiis’ favourite candidate. Nevertheless, Gasp won’t talk to any club before the end of the season and the same is true of Fiorentina boss Vincenzo Italiano, who has just earned a place in the Conference League Final for the second year running, but is also expected to leave the La Viola once the season ends.
