So far, the Swiss goalkeeper has started in every one of his team’s matches this season in Serie A. The former Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach keeper has also started every match in the Champions League, only dropping out of the starting eleven for one match, the Coppa Italia win against Udinese in December.
However, Sommer’s streak of starts in Serie A is set to come to an end as he has suffered a fracture in his right thumb. Further tests will be necessary to show the exact severity of the injury. However, what’s abundantly clear is that he will not be able to play in Inter’s next match where they face Genoa in Serie A this Saturday.
Then, before the March break Inter face a crunch Serie A clash with Napoli as well as a Champions League round of sixteen tie against either Feyenoord or PSV. This means that Josep Martínez will be facing his former club in his first Serie A appearance for Inter.
He was signed from Genoa to act as a backup and an understudy to Sommer, but has only just one cap, in a Cup game. Meanwhile, according to legendary manager, Fabio Capello, Feyenoord will be easier for Inter to face than PSV as the Nerazzurri prepare to learn their next Champions League opponent.
Following the eliminations of Juventus, Milan, Atalanta, and Bologna, the Nerazzurri remain the only Serie A club involved in the Champions League. They finished the league phase in the top eight, getting direct access to the Round of 16. Now, they will meet PSV or Feyenoord in the next round.
The two Dutch sides eliminated Juventus and Milan, respectively, in the knockout playoff. Inter will learn their opponents during the Champions League draw on Friday. So, which would be the easier team to face for Inter? “The Eredivisie standings tell us that Feyenoord are behind PSV, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence,” Capello replied.

“Based on what we saw in the two matches between PSV and Juve, I believe Bosz’s team has more solutions and quality than their Rotterdam counterparts. Feyenoord also have many absences, and I’m unsure how many players will return for the next Champions League round.” He further added.
