There has been some uncertainty regarding exactly when Inter would be playing their Supercoppa Italiana match or matches. The Nerazzurri qualified for the expanded-format competition as last season’s Coppa Italia winners. Coppa Italia runners-up Fiorentina also qualified.

As did last season’s Serie A champions and runners-up Napoli and Lazio. It’s long been certain that the Supercoppa would follow the expanded four-team format. And that Saudi Arabia would host the competition, as they had done last season. But there has been some changing around as far as the exact dates for the fixtures.

Now, however, things have settled into a final schedule. The first Supercoppa Italiana semifinal match will be between Napoli and Fiorentina. The two teams will face off at Al-Awwal Park Stadium in Riyadh on January 18. Then, the following day, it will be the second semifinal between Inter and Lazio.

That match will take place at the same stadium too. Should Inter beat Lazio and move on to the final to face either Napoli or Fiorentina, they will play again three days later, on January 22. The final of the Supercoppa Italiana will also take place at the same ground in Riyadh.

Inter have won the Supercoppa Italiana in each of the past two seasons. They beat Juventus and AC Milan in one-off matches to lift the trophy. They were recently dumped out of this season’s Coppa Italia tournament by giant killers, Bologna in extra time at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium in the Round of 16 but they still lead on the Serie A table with four points ahead of second placed Juventus.

Meanwhile…

Reports of an imminent agreement between Inter and Napoli midfielder, Piotr Zielinski has dominated the news recently after the player reportedly failed to reach an agreement with the Serie A defending champions.

Even their president, Aurelio de Laurentiis seemed to suggest that the player wants to move elsewhere in a recent interview, but the Partenopei haven’t really given up on the player yet. The Polish international has been a key player for the Partenopei since he arrived in 2016.

However, his contract will expire at the end of the season and the management has been unable to tempt him with its extension offers. By January, he will be free to openly negotiate with clubs outside Italy. In the meantime, the Nerazzurri plunged into the scene, making swift progress with his agent and intermediary. According to Sky Sport Italia, Napoli are still working on Zielinski’s contract renewal.

The source states that the Italian champions are still pushing to convince the Pole of penning a renewal. On the other hand, the Nerazzurri had reportedly reached an agreement in principle with the player’s entourage. So at the moment, Inter can only observe from afar while hoping that Zielinski and his representatives remain true to their word.

The 29-year-old remains a regular starter for Napoli who have been struggling since the start of the season, whether under the guidance of Rudi Garcia or his successor Walter Mazzarri. The former Udinese and Empoli man has made 22 appearances across all competitions this season, contributing with three goals and as many assists. Zielinski can either play as a box-to-box midfielder or in a more advanced position behind the striker.
