Frankfurt Captain Tanja Pawollek tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee.

The 25-year-old was injured in the Champions League group game against FC Barcelona. For the midfielder, it is the second cruciate ligament tear of her career, the first of which she suffered in her left knee in the DFB Cup final in 2021.

After returning from Barcelona this Friday, Pawollek will undergo surgery as soon as possible.

“We are very, very sad about the shocking diagnosis. We are all incredibly sorry for her, who will now be missing for a longer period of time and has been incredibly important to us on and off the pitch in recent months,” says head coach Niko Arnautis on the club website.

“We wish Tanja a lot of energy and strength and are convinced that she will come back stronger as a fighter – unfortunately she already knows the situation. As a team we will compensate for the loss and will now play for our captain on the pitch!”

The 2-0 loss to FC Barcelona ended the German side’s campaign in the 2023/2024 UEFA Women’s Champions League for the season.
