Kansas City Current have been dealt a concerning injury update as star striker Temwa Chawinga remains sidelined with a hip adductor injury at the start of the 2026 NWSL preseason.
More Details
The back-to-back NWSL MVP has been placed under a season-ending injury (SEI) designation after sustaining the setback in mid-October, which forced her to miss Kansas City’s quarterfinal defeat to eventual champions NJ/NY Gotham FC.
Incoming head coach Chris Armas acknowledged the delicate nature of the situation, stressing the need for caution in Chawinga’s recovery.
“It’s hard because of the nature of the injury,” Armas told The Athletic.

“With Temwa, we’ve got to be very careful, but she’s looking great and doing lots of good work on the return to play.”
While the SEI listing raises questions about Chawinga’s immediate future, there is still optimism around her return.

The Current’s regular season begins on March 14, and NWSL rules allow clubs to lift a player’s SEI status at any point once the season starts, giving the Malawian forward valuable time to complete her recovery.
For now, all eyes remain on Chawinga’s rehabilitation as Kansas City prepare for the new campaign without their talismanic striker.
