Jonatan Giraldez’s side had to rely on extra time to secure a 3-1 win over Real Madrid in the Super Cup semi-final on Thursday at the Estadio Romano, Mèrida.

Claudia Pina opened the scoring for the Catalan side with a right-footed shot from the edge of the box which hit the bottom right corner in the 24th minute.

Their joy was cut short in the 54th minute as a quickly taken free kick by Caroline Weir hit the back of the net for Real Madrid’s equaliser.

Five minutes later, it turned worse for the Spanish Champions as Irene Paredes was sent off after her second bookable offense.

The numerical advantage made the game tick and tight with both sides searching for the winning goal heading into extra time.

A foul on Lucy Bronze in the box gave Barcelona the chance to retake the lead from the penalty spot which Mariona Caldentey didn’t miss to restore her side’s lead in the 111th minute.

Asisat Oshoala who replaced Geyse played a pivotal role by stealing the ball from a Real Madrid player inside the box before assisting Selma Paralluelo who converted her side’s third goal.
