The Barcelona captain returned to action 212 days after his last appearance which came in the final match of the previous LaLiga campaign against Villarreal at Montjuïc. On this occasion, his comeback took place in Castilla-La Mancha, where he started between the posts at the Pedro Escartín Stadium.
With his ambitions firmly set on securing the Germany number-one shirt for next summer’s World Cup, Marc-André ter Stegen needs consistent game time in the second half of the season.
At Barcelona, his opportunities would be limited, as he would only come into contention if both Iñaki Peña’s successors Garcia and Szczęsny were unavailable. For that reason, it has been communicated that a temporary move elsewhere would be more beneficial for him than remaining in a peripheral role.

As a result, Ter Stegen is increasingly receptive to the idea of a January departure. As per MD, several clubs are monitoring his situation. Bayern Munich have surprisingly entered the picture in recent weeks, while interest has also been registered from AS Monaco, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Beşiktaş.
Barcelona are open to facilitating a loan move should the goalkeeper request it, with the understanding that any of the interested sides could offer him a starting role for the remainder of the campaign. However, the Catalan club would expect a substantial portion of his wages to be covered as part of any deal, a condition that could also create room for Barcelona to strengthen their squad ahead of a return to the Spotify Camp Nou.
The performance suggested that Ter Stegen has fully recovered from the lower back problems that required surgery in July. Now in his twelfth season at the club, the goalkeeper has opened his 2025/26 campaign, taking his total number of appearances for Barcelona to 423.
