The Curious Case Of Philippe Coutinho

Written by Patrick Echatah
Barcelona seem to be in a financial mess, this can be partially attributed to their lavish spending in recent past. We are going to take a look at their record signing – Philippe Coutinho, a player who has failed to cut it at Barcelona.
Philippe Coutinho who was bought for over 150 million euros has failed emphatically at his dream Club. Coutinho’s significant contribution to Barcelona was during his loan spell at Bayern which resulted in the famous 8-2 defeat of Barcelona where he had an hand in three goals (scoring two and creating another) against his parent club.

Many analysts have wondered why he failed at Barcelona despite the faith shown to sign him. While some have postulated that his failure is due to him being played out of position, others have said that the shadow of Messi hovering ominously at the Camp Nou has been a huge inhibiting factor.
He got another chance last season under Ronald Koeman but unfortunately got injured before the thick of things. To put things in perspective, Coutinho is Barca’s record signing and he cost nearly the same amount as Kylian Mbappe from Monaco to PSG yet the impact of both players at their respective clubs cannot be compared.
Coutinho was the star man for Liverpool, he famously wore the iconic number “10” jersey for the Reds and was well on the path to becoming a legend in Liverpool, but due to the lucrative salary offer from Barca and the lure of being a Champions League winner, Coutinho jumped ship.
As it stands, he is neither a Liverpool nor a Barcelona legend. The only thing Coutinho will be remembered for is his outrageous transfer fee from Liverpool, which has been an epic fail at Barcelona.
Barcelona understand that it will be very tough to offload Coutinho this summer, and the truth is that his continuity at the Blaugrana club is almost taken for granted.
Liverpool will be extremely grateful to him because it was his transfer fee that funded the purchase of Van Dijk from Southampton. The case of Coutinho teaches modern players to always look before they leap.
