The Magpies had a prime opportunity to sign Trafford 12 months ago but were hampered by Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which led to the acquisition of Odysseas Vlachodimos instead.
Despite the financial hurdles being cleared recently and Trafford reportedly being keen on a move to Tyneside last week, the deal ultimately fell through, allowing Manchester City to snap him up.
Manchester City have re-signed goalkeeper James Trafford after exercising a buy-back option in his contract with Burnley. Trafford, who set a Championship record with 29 clean sheets last season, has signed a five-year deal with an option for a sixth.
He will wear the No. 1 shirt and is expected to compete with current first-choice goalkeeper Ederson, despite previous rumors linking Trafford to clubs in Turkey or Saudi Arabia. This move will allow long-term backup goalkeeper Stefan Ortega to depart.
Upon his return, Trafford expressed his strong connection to the club, calling it “home,” and praised manager Pep Guardiola’s coaching abilities. “This is the place I call home.
